DART on Track to Improved Decision Support Using Client / Server Technology

The Client

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), with a modern lineup of public transit services and customer facilities, transports residents and visitors between 12 adjoining cities. Their growing network of light rail and commuter rail lines, plus a fleet of nearly 1,000 late-model buses and vans, move more than 200,000 people a day across a 700-square-mile service area. By nearly doubling ridership since 1996, DART is a popular alternative to traffic jams and parking hassles.

The Challenge

Monitoring and forecasting the diverse activity of the DART agency is key to the agency's ongoing success. DART needed to upgrade and implement new system architecture. Efficiently streamlining these processes was a long-term task that would take 3 ?years of effort between DART and BearingPoint.

The Solution

A phased approach was required to implement multiple client/server applications, massive data conversion, and business process reengineering. Assistant Vice President of DART Information Systems Richard Jarrett remarked that, "The selection of (BearingPoint) as implementation partner was based on (BearingPoint's) experience in the transit industry, as well as who they were bringing to the table and their overall approach to the project." BearingPoint was able to partner and guide DART through all levels of implementation and training.

The team of BearingPoint and DART worked through implementation and adjusted to the ensuing changes in business processes for 3 ?years. DART is better prepared for the future with the ability to take advantage of Web-based technologies, quicker access to information, improved reporting capabilities, production of more online reports, and development of extended modeling forecasts.
