It was named Kelly Air Force Base in 1948 when the Air Force became a separate branch of the Armed services. It was named after Lt. George E. Kelly who was the first American aviator to lose his life while piloting a military aircraft on May 10, 1911. The ChallengeThe Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission voted to close Kelly Air Force Base (AFB) in 1995. Faced with the challenge of realigning and closing a base that had provided outstanding mission support for more than 80 years, BearingPoint was chosen from many respondents to assist in implementing the change. The SolutionPartnering with the City of San Antonio’s local redevelopment authority - Greater Kelly Development Authority, the San Antonio Logistics Center, and the Air Force Base Conversion Agency, BearingPoint sought to bring solutions for the San Antonio community and the United Air Force. BearingPoint assisted parties in compliance with laws and regulations as well helping to develop adopted innovative approaches to process and program management through actions such as training on the BRAC process, developing a joint communications strategy and establishing integrated process teams.
