The company began to explore ways to create organizational efficiencies and reduce administrative expenses. In addition, the company's mainframe-based legacy computer systems were no longer producing timely and readily useable information to facilitate labor related organizational compliance programs. The ChallengeThis client made the decision to replace the legacy systems with a company-wide integrated Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution in order to significantly improve reporting capabilities and reduce administrative costs. Because they had experienced lengthy implementation schedules and cost overruns in the past when using outside firms for software and hardware implementations, they were skeptical of outside consultants. Yet they recognized they did not have the internal resources to complete the project on a timely basis. Among the challenges they faced was the need to partner with an experienced company who could oversee the process from project initiation to change management-one who could produce rapid results within tight budget parameters. The SolutionThe client cited two primary reasons for partnering with BearingPoint on the ERP installation. First, BearingPoint's experience with ERP implementations and second, with over 9,000 professionals employed world-wide, BearingPoint was able to select team members who had a history of expertise and skill in installing PeopleSoft software and the depth and breadth of knowledge of the insurance-payor industry. Our ability to greatly reduce the ERP project lifecycle rested in our R2i solution for accelerated implementations. This approach incorporates industry-specific best practices, along with our experience in software implementations, to achieve its goal of cutting a project's delivery time in half. The methodology utilizes five distinct stages: conceive, design, develop, deploy, and evaluate and support. But introduction of the R2i methodology was only part of the solution. BearingPoint had to articulate R2i's value to the client, attaining buy-in to the accelerated process and its benefits. Eventually every level of the company, from executive management to systems personnel and end-users were convinced of the necessity and advantages of a rapid implementation. The BenefitsUsing the R2i methodology, BearingPoint was able to implement PeopleSoft's human resources, benefits, payroll and budgeting modules-plus automated time and attendance-in a mere nine months. The results included immediate efficiencies in benefits enrollment and company-wide consistency in following established guidelines. In addition, this client was able to replace its manually intensive budgeting process, replete with inconsistent data use and intensive manual processing, with a streamlined, paperless process that relied on consistent, enterprise-wide data. It is now able to comply with federal regulatory obligations using new capabilities in reporting and tracking for human resources and payroll functions. |
