The Client

Yale University is a private, independent institution of higher education founded in 1701. The 260-acre campus in New Haven, Connecticut, includes Yale College, Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and 10 Yale Professional Schools.

The Challenge

During Y2K compliance upgrades in 1996, Yale University officials realized that their computer systems were obsolete and their business practices outdated. The university purchased Oracle Financial and Human Resource applications to meet four objectives:

• Improve decision-making capacity.
• Improve quality of service to all levels of users.
• Reduce costs and enhance revenues.
• Reduce risk.

Yale then turned to BearingPoint for a strategic partner with higher education expertise and system implementation skills.

The Solution

BearingPoint worked with Yale and the Oracle team on the functional specifications for their relational database management system. We modeled Yale’s future system needs against Oracle’s current functionality; then identified gaps and helped develop solutions. For all necessary transactions, such as creating purchase orders and processing invoices, BearingPoint developed specific scenarios, tested them, and documented the results. Processes were then improved as needed. After that, we tested process integration, stringing multiple scenarios together and performing end-to-end checking. We helped Yale meet its objectives with test planning, documentation, scenario creation, test execution, and results reporting.
